Study for an MBA Banking and Finance Master’s Degree at one of Europe’s foremost Banking and Finance Schools. The MBA Banking and Finance is designed for candidates with degrees or relevant business backgrounds, who wish to develop their expertise and further their professional careers.

A primary objective of the MBA Banking and Finance is to develop knowledgeable and capable executives to move quickly to key positions in the financial services sector. The programme will provide executive training at an advanced level covering the latest developments in the management of banks and financial services firms.

We have long held a strong international reputation in the study of banking and finance. Our long established and highly successful MA programme has run since 1973 and over this period we have also had a strong PhD programme where research typically focuses on banking and financial sector issues. Postgraduates have enjoyed a mix of both theoretical and practical elements covering contemporary developments in the banking and financial field. The MBA aims to extend and develop advanced training relating to the practical managerial issues faced by modern financial service firms.

The main aim of our full-time MBA is to introduce a much stronger practical emphasis focussing on the strategies and financial management of financial firms. Your MBA will give you practical insight and skills in a range of strategic and management areas in financial services. We invite practitioners to share their views and experiences. Case studies and contemporary issues figure highly in the programme.

The School has a lively group of staff, who are always willing to share their knowledge and expertise. Your teaching staff at Bangor are active researchers, combining high levels of expertise with a desire to extend their subject area, and, most importantly from a postgraduate viewpoint, an enthusiasm to encourage others to develop their academic, financial and business skills.

 DThe programme is accredited by the CIMA (the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) which means students could be entitled to claim exemptions for some of their professional examinations, please see CIMA website.

Why study the MBA Banking and Finance?

Financial systems and financial services firms’ strategies are now involved in a fundamental, far reaching process of realignment and change. The strategic priority of banks and other financial institutions has shifted away from growth and size alone towards a greater emphasis on profitability, performance and shareholder value creation. The growing economic importance of financial sectors has also re-emphasised that bankers, fund managers, multinational companies, securities firms, regulators and financial advisers must have a clear understanding of the theory and practice relating to banking and finance.

Aims of the course

The Bangor Business School aims to build on our long-established expertise in the area of postgraduate training in banking and finance by offering a one-year modular MBA Banking and Finance, which aims to develop participants’ academic and managerial skills in these areas. An important objective is to provide relevant analytical training to familiarise participants with the latest strategic, managerial and industrial developments in the financial services industry.

The MBA Banking and Finance course provides a coherent analytical framework for the study of banking and financial developments from a management perspective. The emphasis throughout the programme is on the application of contemporary, financial, managerial and strategic developments that affect real-world decision-making in the global financial industry.

We recognise that a thorough understanding of recent developments in banking and financial firm strategies, financial management, risk management, international financial markets, marketing strategies and performance evaluation are essential requirements for all those involved in financial sector activities.

Who should consider studying the MBA Banking and Finance?

The course will be of interest to the following people:

  • Graduates who have professional experience in the financial sector;
  • Managers and accountants in public and private organisations who wish to develop their financial management skills;
  • Managers employed in the financial services industry;
  • Graduates contemplating a career in the banking and financial services industry;

Program Background

The concept of the German “Energiewende” – literally, energy transition – has gained international attention. It includes a variety of measures that aim at making Europe’s largest economy free of fossil fuels and nuclear energy. In order to attain this, all areas of energy production and consumption will have to go through a transition process. Besides mobility and industry, buildings are therefore one of the key factors for a successful Energiewende.

Most of all, this implies re-directing from a mainly fossil-fueled energy supply towards renewable energies and a much more energy-efficient use of energy in buildings and urban areas. This is one of the largest and most urgent challenges of current urban development and other social disciplines.

Finding solutions to such a complex challenge means that a multitude of actors from business, society, and public administration take part in the process and influence it with their differing and often conflicting interests. Resulting from this is the need for skilled workers who both understand all stakeholders and can work with them.

Building Sustainability

Strategic concepts for communication and cooperation in large-scale projects are crucial for their success. Whereas, “simply” building a house has become a manageable task, things become much more complicated when considering the urban environment and wider interests such as energy efficiency. The Master program, Building Sustainability, focuses therefore, not only on technical and economic perspectives, but also aims at imparting relevant knowledge from other disciplines. This means that the scope of the program is both broad and specific at the same time. The combination of technology, management and sustainability-related topics is therefore a unique opportunity for young professionals to extend their skills.

The MBA program Building Sustainability – Management Methods for Energy Efficiency of the Technische Universität Berlin will teach students skills, methods, and concepts to consider different approaches, to understand them and to align them for reaching sustainable solutions. Such competences are not only important in the context of the Energiewende but they are indispensable in every building, construction and real estate project that takes energy efficiency and other sustainability criteria into account.

The idea is that sustainable project results that consider economic, ecological, and social aspects can only be achieved in extensive cooperation of all stakeholders. Managing and moderating such a cooperation is one of the major challenges of implementing sustainability in building projects of all scales. The program aims therefore on enabling students to understand the complexity of planning and management processes and to develop according solutions. This will happen in modules with different approaches: some will teach facts and numbers, others will facilitate connections between different fields and the softer skills of mediating between them and some are designed to apply these competences to practical projects.

The TU-Campus EUREF is located on the EUREF (European Energy Forum) campus in Berlin-Schöneberg. This former industrial area has been developed into a research hub for energy efficiency, renewable energies, and smart grids. Students will gain insight into the numerous real-life examples of building sustainability without having to leave the campus.

Students and graduates

The program addresses a broad group of professionals with varying academic backgrounds, mostly in engineering and technology, management, economics, architecture and urban or environmental planning. However, applicants with other academic backgrounds coupled with working experience in a related field are also encouraged to apply, personal motivation plays an important role in the selection process. Class diversity is one of its greatest assets, as students will not only learn from lecturers with science and business backgrounds, but also from each other.

Graduates will be able to moderate and manage complex projects in the construction, real estate, and planning sector. They will be able to assess the project from technical, ecological, and economic perspectives and find solutions which take all stakeholders into account.

Curriculum

Management decisions in the sustainable building sector require a profound understanding of the sector’s technical, economic, legal, and entrepreneurial peculiarities. Climate and economic changes, controversial opinions, technological progress as well as regulation shape and limit the entrepreneurial room, but also offer chances and opportunities. The industry, therefore, requires broadly skilled individuals who are experts in the field.

The master program is taught over a period of three semesters. The first semester covers the technical, economic, entrepreneurial and legal foundations for management decisions in the sustainable building sector; the second semester deepens this view and looks at business practices, offers a review of current challenges with a lecture series and an provides application of the skills acquired in an interdisciplinary project; the third semester broadens the view while simultaneously focusing on practice according to student’s individual interests. All semesters include lectures, tutorials, seminars as well as excursions, online materials related to practice and extracurricular activities. The Master Thesis is written at the end of the third semester and concludes the program.

Degree: Master of Science (120 credits) with a major in Business Administration

Teaching language: English

In the two-year master’s program in Business Administration - Strategy and Management in International Organizations (SMIO), we aim to educate future leaders with good judgment, who can analyze complex problems and make well-balanced decisions.

The program combines fundamental academic knowledge (thinking and reasoning) and experiential knowledge (skills) to prepare students to go beyond applying known solutions to known problems.

The learning pillars of the program are research-based knowledge grounded in rich empirical examples, a focus on critical and in-depth analysis, and communication of results. The program combines the depth of a research master with the rich practical examples and casework-intensity of a more practical master. The program courses therefore each lay a solid research foundation in the form of articles and books by both classic and contemporary great thinkers. On top of that, each course provides insights into the workings of a number of international organizations (ranging from Starbucks and Apple to The Red Cross) and empirical phenomena (from CSR and outsourcing trends to business development in East Africa). Students then use their research-based foundation to draw connections, define problems and analyze through for example casework and projects. Each course also practices the students’ communication skills in one or more areas, through the writing of argumentative essays, oral presentations, feedback-sessions, debates and café seminars.

The program seeks to simulate the future work environment of the students, and hence learning processes are centered in teamwork, leadership and organization, and set in an environment where the study tempo and expectations are high and the diversity of people great. The cultural mix enables us to use the class itself as a teaching tool, where the development of cross-cultural competences becomes a positive side effect of for example team projects.

From day one, we actively work with team processes where taken-for-granted ideas are challenged and the students’ abilities are stretched, step-by-step. Our SMIO students are typically highly committed and hard-working, used to assuming responsibility, and working under pressure in a multicultural environment where a variety of perspectives have to be turned into workable solutions. Challenging assignments and tight deadlines hone the students’ bonds and SMIO students therefore generally get to know each other well, forming an international network for the future.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will have acquired analytical skills, problem-solving skills, and a solid strategic foundation. They will also be seasoned team workers with an international outlook, who are used to embracing complexity.

The Executive MBA is a two-year part-time programme which is designed to develop your knowledge, skills and capability, while at the same time allowing you to improve your organisation. In contrast to many part-time programmes which require regular attendance at evenings or weekends, the teaching at Lancaster is packed into short, intensive modules to help you balance your studies with your other commitments. Each core module starts with a two-week online course that gives you an initial overview of the subject. This is followed with an intensive face-to-face workshop which typically runs from Thursday to Saturday.

During these sessions, you will develop strong working relationships with staff and members of the cohort which creates a valuable support network to enhance your learning experience.

Work placement scheme

Many postgraduate courses at Kingston University allow students to do a 12-month work placement as part of their course. The responsibility for finding the work placement is with the student; we cannot guarantee the work placement, just the opportunity to undertake it. As the work placement is an assessed part of the course, it is covered by a student's tier 4 visa.

Invoicing on the placement courses is split into two stages. The standard course fee is payable in year 1 with the placement fee invoiced in year 2. Therefore, students starting in September 2018 would therefore be charged the placement fee of £1,230 in September 2019. Students commencing the course in September 2019 will be invoiced the placement fee in 2020 (provisionally £1,350).

This amount will only be charged to your account after you find a placement and are enrolled on the module. You will not be charged this fee if you do not manage to secure a work placement.
