Assessment methods

The following assessment methods are employed to support the integrated aims of the course outcomes:

This course uses a range of formative and summative assessment methods to enable you to reflect upon your progress and improve your work.

Formative assessments are designed to give you feedback and offer opportunities for reflection within a unit. These may be tutor or peer-led or require you to engage in critical self-reflection. Formative assessments do not count towards your unit grade.

Summative assessments come at the end of a unit or period of study. Summative assessments can be holistic or use elements of assessment. Holistic assessment produces one grade for all the assessment requirements based upon the assessment criteria. Element assessment assigns percentage weightings to individual parts of the assessment requirements and these grades are then calculated to attain the overall grade for the unit.

The types of output that are assessed will also vary and may include practical and written work, case studies, reports, presentations and role-plays.

You will be encouraged to be actively engaged in the assessment process through tutorials and learning journals where you record and reflect upon your own progress.

The award of Executive MBA (Fashion) is based on the successful completion of all units. Credit is awarded when a student passes each unit and the final awarded grade will be determined by the grade awarded for the Consultancy Project.

Methods include:

  • Case study analysis
  • Online discussions
  • Business reports
  • Presentations
  • Business research analysis
  • Consultancy project
  • Leadership skills activities

Advance your leadership skills and develop your business acumen in the creative industries.

Building on our 35-year experience of running one of the world's leading, triple-accredited MBA programmes, this Executive MBA can be studied online with attendance at four residential weeks over two years.

It is for busy professionals either already working in the creative sector or looking to make the transition into the sector, who wish to gain the strategic skills and knowledge required to respond to increased digitisation and globalisation.

The programme is designed and taught by Ashridge Executive Education with the expertise and contribution from two experienced industry partners: Creative Skillset and Atticus Education. An Advisory Board of senior executives from the creative industries including advertising, publishing, film and television provides extensive industry knowledge, experience and support for this qualification.

Credibility and expertise

This brand new Executive MBA is brought to you by triple-accredited Ashridge Business School. One of only 1% of business schools globally to be accredited by AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB, Ashridge provides the assurance of quality, credibility and relevance.

Creative Skillset http://creativeskillset.org/ is the UK-wide strategic skills body that works to ensure that the UK's creative industries have continued access now and in the future to the skills and talent they require. Their unrivalled knowledge of the creative industries has ensured that this Executive MBA is directly relevant and fills the skills gap in the need for strategic management expertise.

This qualification is also supported by an Advisory Board of industry experts.

Who is it for?

Whether you are a freelancer, mid-career professional, business owner or entrepreneur, the Ashridge Executive MBA for the Creative Industries is a strategic programme for professionals wishing to lead, establish or grow their role and their business in the fast-paced, changing environment of the creative industries. To apply, you must have a minimum of 3 years’ work experience plus a Bachelor degree, or a minimum of 5 years’ work experience without a degree. English must be at IELTS 7.0 level or equivalent for those for whom English is not their first language. The Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) is not mandatory but may be required in certain circumstances. Work experience in the creative industries is not essential, but you will need to be able to base your assignments on a relevant organization during the programme.

What will you learn?

This is a general MBA including all the main subjects of strategic management: marketing, finance, operations, leadership, strategy, global management, sustainability, economics and innovation. However, resources for each subject are tailored to ensure they are relevant to the creative industries. In addition, you can use your own organization as the basis for your learning and your assignments, to ensure direct relevance and practical application while you study. There are no exams, just assignments and a final business-based masters project, so your organization may even benefit from free consultancy! This is of particular value if you are looking for company sponsorship for your studies. The four residential weeks will include development of personal and leadership skills which are more effective when practiced face-to-face. While studying online, you will have the opportunity to interact with your tutor and your peers through discussion forums, privately and in the virtual classroom.

Flexibility and innovation

This is an online MBA that can be studied in your own time to fit around busy work schedules, especially important in the creative industries. The online study planner will outline the study schedule, key deadlines and dates for online interactive sessions. You will then be able to draw on the extensive online resources, including state-of-the-art video material from Atticus Education and access to the MBA Learning Zone and Virtual Ashridge. Here you will find numerous databases of thousands of articles, industry journals, company reports, and e-books which are all freely available to support your studies. Although focused around distance learning, you will be expected to attend four residential weeks, two per year, to gain the key soft skills required to support the academic elements of the MBA. Three of these weeks will be at Ashridge Business School, near London, UK and one will be outside of the UK.

An MBA challenges how you think and act in business. Employers want more from their managers than knowledge and strategic thinking – they also seek leadership skills, commitment and creativity. The Leeds MBA equips you to meet these challenges.

Ranked among the world’s best (The Economist Which MBA? Ranking 2021), this MBA programme integrates business and management theory with practice, but also emphasises your personal and professional development. You’ll study the foundations of business management, such as marketing, accounting, finance, operations and human resource management.

Importantly, you’ll also enhance key qualities expected of leaders including commercial awareness, interpersonal skills, a genuine understanding of the fundamental business functions and a critical and questioning outlook. You’ll gain an international perspective and build valuable connections, helping you become a global leader.

Our full-time MBA is a one-year intensive programme based on campus in Leeds. Drawing on the strengths of this vibrant city, you work closely with resident academics and MBA colleagues from across the globe to develop your skills through study, coaching and practical application of the latest academic theory.

Practical focus

An integral part of the Leeds MBA is the opportunity to put the knowledge and skills you learn into practice with opportunities to work with a range of organisations. As well as considering a range of business case studies and hearing from guest speakers, you’ll apply your skills through the completion of two live challenges.

The New Venture Challenge allows you to generate ideas for new commercial opportunities and turn them into viable business plans, often for a high-profile global organisation. The Consulting Challenge gives you the chance to provide consultancy support to an external business, usually a social enterprise or voluntary sector organisation.

Professional connections

The Leeds MBA will connect you to a network of corporate partners, practitioners and alumni, with plenty of opportunities to build your own professional network. Your project work will bring you into contact with some of our many partners. We have relationships with Marks & Spencer, IBM, Yorkshire Bank, Asda-Walmart, Lloyds Banking Group, KPMG and the NHS, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises, charities and social enterprises.

You’ll meet prominent external speakers and connect with local business professionals through networking events such as our Corporate Wisdom lecture series. Studying alongside MBA colleagues from a range of professional backgrounds will also broaden your perspective and provide you with a close support network that will extend beyond graduation.

You may also have the opportunity to take part in an international study tour, enabling you to extend your global awareness and experience first-hand the challenges and opportunities facing organisations around the world.

Accreditation

The Leeds MBA is accredited by the Association of MBAs.

Course content

The Leeds MBA begins with an induction that will ensure you gain the most from your MBA experience. You are introduced to the learning culture and the study skills you’ll need to succeed.

Through a variety of taught modules, you’ll gain an understanding of the key components of business management – marketing, accounting, finance, operations and human resource management, etc. Alongside these subjects we explore how to manage and lead people in organisations, through modules in decision making, behaviour, strategy, entrepreneurship and leading in practice.

You’ll also build your appreciation of the wider business environment through modules such as international management and the economics of strategy. During the programme you’ll apply your new skills and knowledge as you complete two live challenges.

The course culminates in your MBA Project, giving you the opportunity to turn your knowledge into practice that relates to your own ambitions. Your project can be desk-based if you want to research a topic in-depth, or you can work on a live management issue with an external organisation to develop links with employers and industry. If you’re planning to start your own company, you could even put together a comprehensive business plan.

MBA Programme Overview

Core courses provide the broad range of skills that MBAs seek. Integration courses tie together the functional skills encountered in the Core phase. They are strategic and practical. Electives enable MBAs to narrow their focus and drill deeper into subject matter of personal or professional interest. MBAs work in-house with companies for 10-12 weeks. Students also have the option to write a business plan or a research paper, if this better aligns with pursuing their post-MBA career goals. Interaction with Career Services happens throughout the entire programme. The purpose is to deliver soft skill training and clarify post-MBA goals. Ongoing 1-to-1 support.

Full-time MBA

The 11 month Full-Time MBA programme is taught in English and has a weekly structure. The programme starts in September each year. In addition to the core and elective courses taught in St.Gallen Switzerland, students also have the opportunity to take a study mission to a foreign country. We offer exchange and elective options at Copenhagen Business School, Imperial College London, Macquarie University and Nanyang Technological University.

Vision & Values Statement

The purpose of the MBA programme is to offer students with a well-rounded approach on business and management from the perspective of a general manager (Purpose).

The programme equips students with the skills and techniques required by a general manager from various business disciplines. The intention is to develop both within, and across functional discipline, knowledge (education and subject/discipline/professional values). The programme promotes an environment where: the material focuses on contemporary topics and challenges; students are encouraged to take ownership for their learning journey; learning is rooted in rigorous management research; and application of knowledge is encouraged (the nature of the learning environment for students).

In addition to lectures, students work individually and in small groups on business cases and assignments. Students are also exposed to skills training sessions, and presentations by visiting lecturers and practitioners. They are also required to undertake an international study trip (key approaches to teaching, learning and assessment).

Our intensive, one-year Full-Time MBA combines academic rigour and practical relevance.

There is a careful balance between teaching, learning, individual work and group work. Case study methodology and class-based discussions are used to strengthen your conceptual, analytical and problem-solving skills. There are also regular seminars held by expert guest speakers.

Your analytical, innovative and entrepreneurial skills will be challenged and stretched, and the selection of projects available allow you to apply your learning to real-world situations.

Study Programme

You will complete pre-study modules to equip you with the basic knowledge and skills required for the programme. You are required to pass these modules, but they are not formally assessed.

Core modules begin in the autumn term and continue throughout the academic year. All students follow the same programme for these initial months and cover key concepts in business.

During the spring and summer terms, you choose optional modules to study. Optional modules allow you to shape the programme to your own ambitions and specialise in the areas of business that interest you the most or suit your career ambitions.

The programme includes a number of integrative modules that bring learning together, allowing you to develop by putting into practice what you have covered in the core modules. These include the Global Experience Week, Capstone Week, Business Simulation, Imperial Innovation Challenge, Consulting Project or Entrepreneurial Journey, and a final individual project or internship report.

Our optional exchange programme is a great opportunity to network internationally whilst taking advantage of specialised optional modules at one of our partner schools. You can choose to travel to another business school and learn from their expert faculty, or join one of their abroad tours and build your network in another country.

Careers

You have access to personalised support from Imperial College Business School Careers throughout the programme.

The combination of your enhanced professional skills, strong understanding of business, and numerous opportunities to network with leading experts from the business world will help you pursue your ideal role in business.
