Study for an MBA Banking and Finance Master’s Degree at one of Europe’s foremost Banking and Finance Schools. The MBA Banking and Finance is designed for candidates with degrees or relevant business backgrounds, who wish to develop their expertise and further their professional careers.

A primary objective of the MBA Banking and Finance is to develop knowledgeable and capable executives to move quickly to key positions in the financial services sector. The programme will provide executive training at an advanced level covering the latest developments in the management of banks and financial services firms.

We have held a long and strong international reputation in the study of banking and finance and have run Master's programmes in banking and finance since 1973. Over the same period, we have also run a successful PhD programme where research typically focuses on banking and financial sector issues. Postgraduates have enjoyed a mix of both theoretical and practical elements covering contemporary developments in the banking and financial field. The MBA aims to extend and develop advanced training relating to the practical managerial issues faced by modern financial service firms.

The main aim of our full-time MBA is to introduce a much stronger practical emphasis focussing on the strategies and financial management of financial firms. Your MBA will give you practical insight and skills in a range of strategic and management areas in financial services. We invite practitioners to share their views and experiences. Case studies and contemporary issues figure highly in the programme.

The School has a lively group of staff, who are always willing to share their knowledge and expertise. Your teaching staff at Bangor are active researchers, combining high levels of expertise with a desire to extend their subject area, and, most importantly from a postgraduate viewpoint, an enthusiasm to encourage others to develop their academic, financial and business skills.

Why study the MBA Banking and Finance?

Financial systems and financial services firms’ strategies are now involved in a fundamental, far reaching process of realignment and change. The strategic priority of banks and other financial institutions has shifted away from growth and size alone towards a greater emphasis on profitability, performance and shareholder value creation. The growing economic importance of financial sectors has also re-emphasised that bankers, fund managers, multinational companies, securities firms, regulators and financial advisers must have a clear understanding of the theory and practice relating to banking and finance.

Aims of the course

The Bangor Business School aims to build on our long-established expertise in the area of postgraduate training in banking and finance by offering a one-year modular MBA Banking and Finance, which aims to develop participants’ academic and managerial skills in these areas. An important objective is to provide relevant analytical training to familiarise participants with the latest strategic, managerial and industrial developments in the financial services industry.

The MBA Banking and Finance course provides a coherent analytical framework for the study of banking and financial developments from a management perspective. The emphasis throughout the programme is on the application of contemporary, financial, managerial and strategic developments that affect real-world decision-making in the global financial industry.

We recognise that a thorough understanding of recent developments in banking and financial firm strategies, financial management, risk management, international financial markets, marketing strategies and performance evaluation are essential requirements for all those involved in financial sector activities.

Who should consider studying the MBA Banking and Finance?

The course will be of interest to the following people:

  • Graduates who have professional experience in the financial sector;
  • Managers and accountants in public and private organisations who wish to develop their financial management skills;
  • Managers employed in the financial services industry;
  • Graduates contemplating a career in the banking and financial services industry;
  • Graduates who have relevant practical experience and wish to enhance their skills in the areas of banking and finance;

How you learn

To be a successful leader, you need to understand, implement and integrate the current fundamental concepts of business, and have insights from differing professional perspectives. Completing an integrated module means that instead of studying finance or globalisation in isolation, you study finance together with globalisation, marketing and decision making. Our approach replicates the real world where strategic decisions will span multiple business areas, providing you with a richer and more realistic learning experience.

At the diploma stage of the course, you have the opportunity to complete psychometric tests, which can help you increase your critical self-awareness, better understand your leadership skills and identify areas for development. Additionally, you have the opportunity to work on a consultancy project that involves investigating a real issue within your own organisation, or one with which you are familiar.

Over the course, we tailor assignments and projects to the needs of your organisation or your own areas of interest, which maximises the value of your studies. Your organisation also has the opportunity to provide input into your learning and contribute to your development.

When you study an Executive MBA at Sheffield Hallam University you join a learning community of managers and leaders from across a range of professions and industry backgrounds. This provides you with excellent networking opportunities and you can benefit from seeing different perspectives and solutions to managerial challenges.

Overview

Earning your master of business administration degree gives you the freedom to customize the program to meet your career goals. Choose from a range of concentrations including business analytics, management information systems, supply chain management, as well as joint concentrations with other RIT colleges, such as engineering management and health systems administration.

The MBA program requires 48 semester credit hours and consists of 16 courses, 11 of which are devoted to core functional areas, and five are dedicated to concentration areas and electives. An MBA concentration is a sequence of three courses in one discipline, giving you in-depth knowledge in a chosen topic.

Concentrations

Students may choose from a variety of concentrations that best fit their career goals. Popular concentrations includes finance, marketing, and entrepreneurship. You may choose from a number of joint concentrations offered in partnership with RIT's other colleges. Students may also create a custom concentration using any graduate courses offered at RIT (subject to prerequisites and program director review and approval). A concentration is defined as three MBA electives in an area of specialization. (MBA concentrations do not appear on a student’s transcript.) Students must take one concentration.

Cooperative Education

Cooperative education, or co-op for short, is full-time, paid work experience in your field of study. And it sets RIT graduates apart from their competitors. It’s exposure–early and often–to a variety of professional work environments, career paths, and industries. RIT co-op is designed for your success.

Cooperative education in the MBA program is optional. Academic credit is not granted, but formal recording of the co-op experience is made on the student's transcript. Students in good academic standing are eligible for co-op after completing the foundation course, and a substantial portion of their concentration courses. They also must attend a series of co-op and career services workshops. RIT does not guarantee co-op placements.

Develop and master core competencies in support of your management and leadership ambitions. The Staffordshire University MBA is designed to accelerate your professional and personal development and to contribute to the journey of being the best you can be.

From risk management to leadership and performance, this course will help develop the core competencies required to succeed.

To reach your potential, we know you need to understand more than theory alone. That’s why we’ll challenge you to think on your feet, consider the challenge of different organisational contexts, and act as consultants to a real-life start-up business.

You’ll be taught by a team of senior academics and professional practitioners with years of experience. They’ll share insights into the industry to help you develop a problem and practice-based approach.

By the time you graduate, you’ll have grasped skills you need to succeed as a leader, senior manager or entrepreneur.

On successful completion of study, we will issue the following award: MBA Business Administration

Part-time study

You can study full-time over one year, or part-time over three years, but either way, be prepared for a challenge - the pace will be fast. Our MBA focuses on a problem and practice-based learning, where real and live business issues are discussed and evaluated. The part-time course has two start points, one in September and one in January.

Course content

For this course, you’ll complete six core modules that build your leadership profile, boost your knowledge of risk management and performance techniques, and develop your understanding of marketing strategies.

You’ll also complete three optional modules that are relevant to your career goals. For example, you might work with a local enterprise to create a business plan to build your leadership skills and test your entrepreneurship qualities. Or you might practice your management skills in a financial management situation.

We’ll also put your ability to cope under pressure to the test in a final project. You’ll pick a subject that demonstrates your skills and prepare a 15,000 word dissertation on the topic. This piece of work can be further developed into a doctorate if you want to take it further and we offer the DBA route as well as the PhD.

Careers

After completing the Staffordshire MBA, you’ll be equipped to take on a variety of management and leadership positions in a range of fields including:

  • Accounting and financial management
  • Consultancy
  • Human resource management
  • Manufacturing
  • Marketing management

Graduates from this course now work at Harley-Davidson, Airbus, Corus Hotels, British Telecoms Global Service, IBM, Expedia, Adelphi Research and the ACH Group.

For this course, you will:

  • Delve deeper into subject areas in workshops
  • Be expected to study independently

Our teaching is supported through our Virtual Learning Environment, called Blackboard. This means you can access a range of materials to support your lectures wherever you are.

We’ll also assign you a supervisor to support you throughout your final project.

Assessment

From written assignments to presentations, we’ll assess your learning using a range of techniques.

For example, you’ll demonstrate your skills in oral viva exams. This type of assessment is designed to test your ability to think on your feet and quickly make decisions.

You’ll also carry out a final project where you’ll apply your management and leadership competencies to a real business challenge, draw meaningful conclusions and suggest constructive recommendations.

We usually give you feedback on formal assessments within 20 working days. The format will vary for each module.
