    (Student Profile)

    Astrid Veronica Karam

“I wanted to study energy management as I became interested in supply chain in 2013 after working for a company in Mexico and after studying for a B.A. International Relations at National University of Mexico, one the largest universities in in Mexico and Latin America. I knew there would be lots of opportunities for growth as a lot of the multinationals have new offices in the country and there are lots of new companies starting up there.
I chose this university as I knew about the strong links Aberdeen has within the energy industry in the UK and internationally. I lived in Houston so Aberdeen and the University was well known there and it was pointed out to me. I could not come here for an open day so I relied on the website and an officer from the university to tell me about what it would be like here. I was convinced that Aberdeen was the best place to study due to the employment statistics. In Mexico employment is a very important consideration when studying. I also thought that Aberdeen would be easy to get around and I wouldn’t need a car.

That was in June 2016 and I arrived in January 2017. I live in private accommodation as a Mexican friend was able to advise me that this would be a cheap option and I live in a comfortable flat ten minutes’ walk away with views of the sea and mountains. There were 12 Mexican nationals here already so it was easy to fit and make friends when I arrived and I keep in touch with friends and relatives back in Mexico daily on Skype, Facebook and WhatsApp which is great. There is a good international environment here and it was great that I could meet people from my own country and many different parts of the world whilst studying for the MBA. I have an active social life and I love the sports facilities for swimming, running and working out plus I walk all over the city.

After I finish my degree I would like to see the rest of the UK for a month or so before returning to Mexico to work in the energy industry. I am also interested in the renewables industry and what the potential is there to develop ideas, business and employ people. “
